Unit 4

  1. Describe your experience. Did you find it beneficial? Difficult? Why or why not? Would you recommend this to others? Why or why not?
    1. Once again I can not focus(mentally) with this person talking to me. This week it is a different person and they are not creepy but it still feels awkward. For about 3 seconds this person had my attention when she said think about someone suffering. I thought about my wife but then she said to take there pain away and blow in and blow out and release all the pain.
    2. I do not find this beneficial. I am not even sure what I am supposed to get out of this. I hope someone does and maybe they can reach out to me. Maybe I have shield up to this stuff.
    3. I would not recommend this to anyone else. I feel like they would come back to me and think that there is something wrong with me, but at the same time I do not take away from someone who is benefiting from these audio tape.
  2. What is the concept of "mental workout"? What does the research indicate are the proven benefits of a mental workout? How can you implement mental workouts to foster your psychological health?
    1. A mental workout is anything that stimulates the mind. Trying to come up with a definition of a mental workout is a mental workout. Memory games, reading and even physical exercise can be considered a mental workout. I think that anything that makes you focus, can be considered a mental workout.
    2. Research indicates that mental workouts improve prevention of dementia and  Alzheimer's disease.
    3. Mental workouts can foster our psychological health with exercises such a the "Living Kindness" exercise. It was supposed to relieve us of stress and make us thing and use our mind to get outside of our body.  I think that most mental workouts are beneficial to our psychological health. However there are sometimes where mental workouts can can negative effects such as when you do so many math problems that you feel like your head is going to explode.

  1. Hi James,
I'm sorry to hear you had a difficult time with this exercise. In fact, your description sounds very familiar to what I felt after last week's exercise. I remember I became frustrated at a certain point, and my agitation just grew after that, so my mind refused to even try to cooperate. I'm a little surprised this exercise went so well for me. I did a few things differently this time. I'll share, just in case they might help you, too. First of all, I shut myself in my bedroom and requested no distractions from my family. Second, I put on noise-cancelling headphones. I know this may not be feasible for everyone, but I recommend trying it if it is possible for you. Next, I relaxed before I even started listening. I rested for just a minute with my eyes closed and just let my mind go wherever it wanted. I think I may have connected with this exercise more than others because I have a teenage daughter who always seems unhappy. I used her as my "suffering" person, so it was easy for me to imagine taking away her suffering and replacing it with a smile. I felt like I was a little nicer to her after this exercise, too. I know there is no way to really take away someone's suffering, but in this case I realized if I deliberately make the effort to be kind to my daughter more often, she may start to feel better about herself. I think this might be difficult for us because it is such a foreign concept to our culture. We (Americans) are so busy, we don't have much time to turn inward and focus on our minds and emotions. It almost feels awkward and uncomfortable. I hope you find what helps you connect to one of our future exercises.

  2. Do you go into these exercises with an open mind or do you go in believing that they will not work? That can be the key why they are not working. I will say I am not the most relaxing easy going person but the first two exercises did work very well for me but I decided before doing them to have an open mind. This weeks exercise was not so much a success but then again I have a lot of negative energy right now, so I was probably blocking myself. I think what we are supposed to get out of it, is a state of relaxation and feeling of overall well being. But then again I could be wrong and plus we are different so each of us maybe is supposed to get something different. I hope you can find one that works for you.

    1. Yeah i am with you about the negative energy right now. I think I go into the exercises with being annoyed or not fulling committed to the situation.
